Bokeh Madness 2006

The idea this time was to shoot an entire trip wide open, to push the rendering of out-of-focus detail. Some of it worked, and some of it didn't. If I learned anything, it was this: You have to focus close, get close, and pay strict attention to distance. On the pre-aspheric 35mm Leitz Summicron, the difference from 1m to 2m is almost the same as 2m all the way to infinity! I should have realized this earlier. Instead of trying to shoot at roughly 2 meters, I should have focused even closer, and developed a tighter control of distance. In a crowded city like Tokyo, closeness is the norm.

Yokohama - selective focus at work.

Ordinarily, this would be a throw-away shot. But the falloff and focus somehow make it worthwhile.
